I’ve alluded a few times already to the upcoming Society of Publication Designers (SPD) Awards for next year (47th, covering works from 2011) — you’ll probably remember the really funny poster/flyer that was put together (also in this post), and I hope you’re all following the “Favorite Magazine” series that are posted daily, with industry insiders sharing their picks.

It’s no accident that there are three Brits in charge this year — Jeremy Leslie (MagCulture), Richard Turley (Bloomberg Businessweek), and Luke Hayman (Pentagram) — as there’s a real desire to get more international submissions, to put an end to the US (and let’s be honest, New York) domination. To do that, they’ve not only made it easier to enter, but also cheaper. Below, a rundown:

Special, special notes for this year, the most important one FIRST: there’s an early-bird discount! Get your entries postmarked by December 14th and save the most money. Standard deadline is Friday, January 13th; late deadline (extra $$) is Friday, January 20th.

What else is new? There’s also a very special international discount (check page 8 of the call for entries pdf) for our friends mailing the world’s heaviest packages to us at SPD. Save big and show-off your world-class work to our world-class jury.

Some new categories have also been added, one targetted at indie/self-published works, so come on, if you’re a magazine creator, submit your work! Here’s a link to the entry form (PDF).
