Bonnier Corp. — the company behind Popular Science/Mechanics — has launched its first original iPad magazine, meaning its first title not based on an existing print brand. Roadtrip looks to combine cars and travel, with a lot of emphasis on full-screen photography — the entire magazine is rendered in landscape format.
It’s available now from the iTunes App Store as a free download — this first “preview” issue is sponsored — and future issues will be either paid or free.
This marks the start of a new strategy for Bonnier when it comes to iPad magazine/publication development, as the following comments from Bonnier’s brand director, Chris Tauber, suggest (from Mediaweek):
We’re looking at doing photo-based, mini-publications, getting away from what a magazine is. We’ve found photos look really good on the iPad. With travel titles, we’re looking at doing just the horizontal [view]. Other titles, we’ll take those brands and see how best to reflect them on the iPad. I don’t think there’s one answer.
It’s certainly good to see them try new things, and not already settle into simply giving a digital overcoat to current print publications.
